This introductory workshop will build upon topics covered in the free, asynchronous Canvas course, and present data management issues specific to researchers in the sciences, arts & humanities, and for those working with data involving human participants. The session will include a preview of tools for managing a variety of data across your entire research project.

Make something (did we say...sewing machines?) and get creative (did we say...button making?). Get to know the tools and study spaces in the Toaster. We will have Walter and campus history pop up exhibit including old copies of the Minnesota Daily and the Minnesota Gopher yearbooks in the fancy Upson room (103).

Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, annotate PDFs and sources then create in-text citations, works cited or a bibliography in seconds. The workshop is open to all disciplines, colleges and departments.
Meet with fellow learners on Zoom and learn how to use Zotero to create your own database of citations, PDFs, images, webpages, video and audio files and more. Zotero can then be used to create citations in a large number of citation styles (APA, MLA, CSE, endnotes, footnotes, etc.) which can be added to Google Docs, Microsoft Word and Libre Office.

Plagiarism and academic dishonesty can lead to severe consequences. This online workshop will help you understand what plagiarism is and some of the most common mistakes that students make. We will also talk about Chat GPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Co-pilot and other AI tools, what they do and how to think through using them (or not). You will learn strategies and tools to cite sources, avoid plagiarism and about other resources to get additional support.
In 2022, the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) released a memo requiring that all federal funding agencies implement policies for immediate sharing of data for their grantees. While data sharing is still mandated, in 2026 we see many agencies changing certain aspects of their policies and practices.
This session will review National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Center for Disease Control (CDC), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) changes, as well as address the Gold Standard Science memo (PDF). This session is open to faculty, instructors, researchers, post-docs, graduate students and anyone who wants to learn more.

Whether you are a certified arboreal expert or just tree curious, join us at Wilson Library to learn a little about tree identification, and put that new information into practice by finding and identifying trees on the West Bank area of campus.
We will meet in the Wilson Library Collaboration Studio (first floor), and we will walk as a group to nearby trees outside the Library. Bring your walking shoes and an adventurous spirit!
