Arab immigrants created a thriving neighborhood known as Little Syria when they began settling in lower Manhattan in the late 1800s, with signs in Arabic advertising shops, restaurants and coffeehouses. In Little Syria, Arab Americans raised their families, educated their children, worshiped in churches and mosques, and gradually became part of the life of New York. Though razed to make way for the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and later the World Trade Center, the community’s contributions still resonate today, testifying to the century-long involvement of Arab Americans in New York’s history.
