What: America’s First Gay Marriage

The fight for same-sex marriage began on May 18, 1970, when Jack Baker and Michael McConnell applied for a marriage license in Minneapolis.

This exhibit explores Baker and McConnell’s efforts and the letters of support and opposition they received from around the world. It is a unique view into gay rights organizing in the early 1970s, and how that culminated in the recent Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage across the nation.
